A poem by Mexican poet Luis Armenta Malpica (Mexico, 1961), my translation / Dos poemas de LAM

The Immersed Fish

The fish will be absence when it's no longer named
as long as spiders cannot see it
nor is it given up for dead in
some nest.

The fish will be the astonishment feigned when
in the history section
of the zoo it will be gazed at
stuffed
above a tag:
                                    Extinct
                                                 fish.

Then it will be missed.

More than one will say that he did know it –
it had a pair of powerful ailerons
covered with metal scales
and on the tip of the body
at the helm
a smokescreen
shadowed
its progress.

And another will say no
the fish was an old skyscraper
a sort of pyramid made of glass and mortar
where the boys would hide the change
stolen from their parents.
And a glorious old woman
(which will denote her lineage and sex)
will open the frills of her blouse
take apart her torso
and show the areola
the unmistakable body of the fish
in her ribs.

And she will not say the name that was once
the heritage of water
will not say that Jellyfish was conceived by old people
and that no animal exists other than man…

She will remain
naked
as fish as
if for a long
time
she had been
lying in wait
for a new stroke of
years that would
lead her to
the water.

The woman
in the middle of the air bubble
emerging from her halo
will drink all at once what she once gave
her son
will cling forever to her
mother hook
and die in peace
her lips pierced by a kiss
her eyes of a white twilight
and her heart
split into three
by a drop of water.

And strangers will say to each other...
                                    "She was the anointed one."

In the agony of the fish
convulsed
she will say no with her eyes.
All that was a lie.
Only one thing will be said of her
that man won't suspect:
the woman was the
fish.
She always was.

Yet men are waiting
for it will arrive from somewhere
from man
the mygale
