... a poem is a fact in a person's existence. In other
words, rather than the idealist, non-existent notion of a literary product that
a pure, distant gaze can consume without being altered by such consumption, a
poem is something that "happens" in our lives (both if we create it,
when we materialize it into words, and if we create it, too, by receiving it in
a constellation of words to which we give, or from which emerges, a sense or
meaning that "glows" or "touches us"). I insist, because I
think this is very important: a poem is something that happens to
"us," it's a fact, an event in our lives in which we participate and
in which it participates, and therefore can alter them. So, we know to what
extent a poem can be a revelation that, in a way, will affect the course of our
lives. In sum, a poem pertains to the world of facts; it's something factual,
and if it's tied to the course of our lives, then it belongs in the realm of
"doing," in the realm of something that philosophy calls
"ethics."

... un poema es un hecho en la existencia de una persona. Es
decir: antes que la noción idealista e inexistente de un producto literario que
una mirada pura y distante puede consumir sin ser por ello alterada, un poema
es algo que “ocurre” en nuestras vidas (tanto si lo creamos nosotros, en el
momento de concretarlo en palabras, como si lo creamos también nosotros, al
recibirlo en una constelación de palabras a la que damos, o de la que surge, un
sentido o significado que “fulgura" o “nos toca”.) Insisto, porque esto me
parece muy importante: un poema es algo que “nos” ocurre, es un hecho, un
acontecimiento en nuestras vidas, en el que participamos y en el que ellos
participan y, por lo tanto, es capaz de alterarlas. Y bien, sabemos hasta qué
punto un poema puede ser una revelación que, de alguna manera, influirá en el
curso de nuestra existencia. En suma: un poema pertenece al mundo de los
hechos; es algo fáctico, y si tiene que ver con el curso de nuestras vidas,
entonces entra en el campo del “hacer”, en el campo de algo que, en filosofía,
se denomina "ética".
